Lost Girl: Wendy after Neverland
MALIBU, CA 鈥 September 3, 2024 鈥 成人直播鈥檚 acclaimed Theatre Department is proud to present its upcoming production of Kimberly Belflower鈥檚 "Lost Girl," scheduled to run from September 24 to September 28 at Lindhurst Theatre on the university's Malibu campus.
Wendy is back from Neverland and everyone has questions. Splintered by the pain of lost love, Wendy retreats to the room of her childhood. The Lost Boys are growing up. Wendy鈥檚 mother is renovating the nursery to a home office. A detective, a doctor, and a therapist all join in the call for Wendy to move on, but grief and growing up are slow, painful processes.
Director and Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre Nanci Carol Ruby directs the
all-student cast. 鈥淚n the lyrical world of 鈥楲ost Girl,鈥 Kimberly Belflower explores
themes of growth, grief, and connection,鈥 says Ruby, 鈥淭he playwright wrote this play
over a period of ten years, while she herself was growing up. This new approach to
the classic tale places Wendy, recently back from Neverland, at the center of the
narrative.鈥
In 鈥淟ost Girl,鈥 Wendy鈥檚 storyline follows her heartbreak, depression, and anger as
she navigates her way back to life in the real world. Though surrounded by family,
friends, and a community that tries to support her, Wendy retreats further into herself.
When Wendy bravely finds connection with insightful parts of herself, she is inspired
to face unfinished business and to open herself to new relationships. Most importantly,
Wendy makes a forever decision to value her own worth.
"I love looking at classic stories through a new lens; I find this process often brings
clarity to our present moment,鈥 says Ruby, 鈥溾楲ost Girl鈥 by Kimberly Belfower, a modern-day
sequel to JM Barrie鈥檚 鈥楶eter Pan,鈥 has a strong connection to the Covid generation
who keenly understand what it means to experience loss, isolation, and the struggle
to reconnect. I root for Wendy as I root for every young person who is having difficulty
reintegrating to life outside of isolation. Wendy gives me hope."
