Occasional Absences During Symptom Severity

Occasional Absences

CSOL: Occasional absences during times of increased symptom severity

  • The student is responsible for contacting the CSOL Academic Dean's office as soon as possible when a disability-related absence will occur / has occurred and as necessary, will inform the Dean as to when he/she will return to class. If the student is unable to reach the Dean's office directly, the student or someone acting on his/her behalf may contact the OSA. Information will then be relayed to the Dean's office through the OSA.
  • The student is responsible for any material covered or work done during such disability-necessitated absences. Extension of deadlines for assignments due and/or arrangements for making up exams missed during such absences must be arranged with the Dean's office as need arises.
  • If, at any time, the Academic Dean determines that the student's absences from class threaten achievement of the learning objectives for the student, or compromise the law school's ability to comply with the ABA accreditation standards, the Academic Dean will notify the Office of Student Accessibility as soon as possible. After consulting with the Dean, the OSA director will contact the student to review available options.

GSEP: Occasional absences during times of increased symptom severity

  • The student is responsible for contacting the professor as soon as possible when a disability-related absence will occur / has occurred and as necessary, will inform the professor as to when he/she will return to class. If the student is unable to reach the professor directly, the student or someone acting on his/her behalf may contact the OSA. Information will then be relayed to the professor through the OSA. The student is responsible for any material covered or work done during such disability-necessitated absences.
  • Extension of assignment deadlines or exam dates, as the need arises due to effects of the diagnosed disability, must be negotiated individually with the course professors. Professors of individual courses and clinical supervisors can best determine appropriateness of adjusting deadlines or exam dates (as well as length of time for extensions) based on course requirements, course objectives, flow of instructional process, and standard of client care.
  • If, at any time, the professor believes that the student's inability to meet timely assignment deadlines, exam dates, or class meetings, threatens the academic integrity of the curriculum, the accomplishment of learning objectives, or the standard of client care, the professor should contact the Office of Student Accessibility AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. After consulting with the professor, the OSA director will contact the student to review available options.

In addition to the school specific descriptions above, please consider the following information regarding this accommodation:

Occasional absences during times of symptom flare ups means there may be times when a student has a flare-up of symptoms and is not able to attend class.

The parameters of this accommodation need to be worked out on an individual basis between the professor and student, based on the structure and requirements of the class. This accommodation depends upon a partnership between the student and professor. OSA is available to facilitate or advise.

We urge each professor and student to discuss the following (though there may be other questions more specific to a course) to make sure there is mutual understanding of expectations of this accommodation:

  • How is attendance an essential component of the class?
    • If the student misses class, is she or he missing the conversations and the learning that are taking place between classmate conversations?
    • If there is an attendance policy, would there be the option to have any additional excused absence(s)?
    • What is the policy for the class if the student misses more than the excused absences (including any additional ones that are determined by the professor and student )? OSA is available to facilitate or advise.
    • Is attendance using remote technology (such as ZOOM, Google Hangout or Facetime) a possibility during a flare-up, and if so, for what percentage of the class meetings?
  • How should the student submit work if absent on a day that an assignment is due? Would the student submit unfinished work on the due date?
  • If the student is absent on the day of a quiz, exam or presentation, is there a class policy already in place regarding missed quizzes, exams, or presentations? If the student misses a presentation, would the student submit materials electronically and present at another class?
  • How and when should the professor be notified when the student is having a flare-up? What are the expectations of communication?
  • If the frequency of absences impacts the structure and learning of the class, the professor will discuss with the student and OSA.

Please know we are here to support both the student and the professor in providing access and maintaining the integrity of the course.
